D1: Arrival and Adventure Commencement

Upon landing at Keflavík International Airport, you’ll receive your 4×4 vehicle, marking the exciting start of your journey. You’ll traverse the otherworldly Reykjanes peninsula, cloaked in vast lava fields, and then make your way south to the Golden Circle.

Overnight stay in the enchanting Golden Circle region.

D2:  Highland - Kerlingarfjöll and Kjölur Trail

 

D3: Tröllaskagi, Charming Villages, and Mighty Waterfalls

Today, you’ll trace the enchanting coast of the Tröllaskagi Peninsula en route to the northern capital, Akureyri. As you journey, you’ll pass through picturesque fishing villages steeped in intriguing tales. 

In Akureyri, take a moment to enjoy a picnic beside the fjord or within the delightful botanical garden. Later, prepare to be awed by the grandeur of the Goðafoss waterfall, aptly named “Waterfall of the Gods,” before continuing your adventure to the Jökulsá gorges, where you’ll encounter Dettifoss, the mightiest waterfall in all of Europe.

Your day concludes with an overnight stay in this captivating region.

Today, we delve into the captivating wonders of Myvatn, a region adorned with an array of volcanic marvels surrounding the lake. 

Embark on a hiking adventure to ascend the Hverfjall crater, traverse the eerie lava fields of Dimmuborgir, explore the mysterious Grotagjá lava cave, wander amidst the solfataras of Hverir, and weave through the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðir. The diverse landscapes that unfold as you circumnavigate the lake are nothing short of astonishing!

Spend the night by the Akureyri fjord, where the sea meets the land, creating a serene and picturesque setting.

D6: Sprengisandur Crossing - An Epic Odyssey

Today marks the beginning of a legendary journey as you embark on the renowned Sprengisandur trail, open only for a fleeting 2 to 3 months each year, serving as a vital link between the North and the South through Iceland’s rugged heart. A well-stocked supply is a must for this adventure.

Your path won’t be without its challenges, including river crossings, but the reward is unparalleled. Be prepared to be awestruck by the breathtaking landscapes that surround you. This trail weaves its way between the western Hofsjökull glaciers and the eastern Tungnafellsjökull and Vatnajökull, creating a visual symphony of nature’s grandeur.

And to soothe your senses and rejuvenate, don’t forget to relish a natural hot bath along your trail.

D8:Exploring the Wonders of Eldgjá

Your journey continues eastward, leading you to the remarkable Eldgjá eruptive fault, where you have the opportunity to embark on a stunning hike. Along the way, consider a visit to Langisjór, where you can revel in the majestic views of glaciers and their serene lakes.

Your night awaits in a refuge, allowing you to relish the remote beauty and natural wonders that define this part of Iceland.

D9:The Enigmatic Beauty of the Black Desert and Glacier

Your journey unfolds further in the Maelifellsandur region, a hidden gem that sees few visitors. This secluded land is adorned with a multitude of points of interest, including the Raudibotn crater, the Strutur mountain with its neighboring hot baths, arguably the most magnificent in all of Iceland. And, of course, you’ll encounter the unparalleled beauty of the black desert and the enchanting Maelifell mountain, both of which are truly one-of-a-kind.

As the day comes to a close, you’ll find solace in a refuge, nestled within this extraordinary landscape, where the natural wonders continue to amaze.

D10:Fjallabak - Unveiling a World Behind the Mountains

Your exploration of the Fjallabak region, aptly named “behind the mountains,” draws to a close. You’ll traverse the mesmerizing black desert and follow the glacier’s edge. As you ascend the Hraftinnusker plateau, you’ll eventually make your way to the quaint town of Hella on Iceland’s south coast.

Throughout this journey, you’ll bear witness to landscapes of astonishing diversity, many of which have served as cinematic backdrops, depicting the allure of otherworldly beauty. It’s a fitting end to a remarkable adventure through this hidden realm “behind the mountains.”

D11:Dive into the Vibrance of Reykjavik

Your morning arrival in Reykjavik marks the beginning of a free day to immerse yourself in the bustling capital city. Meander through the colorful streets and explore the charming small port. Make sure to visit the iconic Harpa cultural center, an architectural masterpiece of glass and steel, and the stunning Hallgrimskirkja church. 

Reykjavik is a city teeming with life, from lively streets to trendy restaurants and boutique shops. It’s a stark contrast to the serene Highlands you’ve left behind, offering a complete change of atmosphere and a chance to reacquaint yourself with civilization.

D12:International Departure

Bid farewell to your trusty 4×4 as you return it to the airport, preparing for your homeward-bound international flight. For those with early morning departures, consider spending the night by the sea, in close proximity to the airport, ensuring a smooth and restful start to your journey back home.

Good to know

  • Itinerary: on this self-drive tour we create a tailor-made itinerary following the length of your stay in Iceland and your personal interest according to our knowledge of the country as travel agency. A day by day itinerary will be given on an indicative basis and accommodations (in refuge or guesthouse) will be booked for you in advance. We provide you with all necessary maps and a trip information package with practical information that allows you to enjoy your vacation in the best possible way; tips on where to buy food, good restaurants, places to go – places to avoid, inescapable sites, our personal knowledge of Iceland and our experience as a local travel agent.
  • Transport: For this self-drive trip, only a 4×4 is required in order to be able to drive on gravel roads and cross fords.
  • Accommodation: For this itinerary we suggest in priority refuges, in order to stay close to the untouched areas of Iceland. Refuge are confortable, heated with gaz and fully equiped for cooking. You just need to bring all food with you. Drinking tape water is available on site. Hot shower (fee) and WC are found in separate building. Beds are in dormitory in sleeping bag (not provided). Sometimes small cottages are available for families (usually 5 or more guests). As the choice can be limited in some regions of the country, it is important to book your stay as soon as possible to benefit from the largest possible offer. Contact us for any specific request.
  • Period to travel: we offer this itinerary only from mid-June to end of September due to weathers conditions and closure of those roads the rest of the year.
