D1: Arrival and the Commencement of Your Journey

Upon your arrival at Keflavik International Airport, embark on an extraordinary experience by picking up your rental vehicle. As you drive through the vast lava fields that extend to the horizon, you’ll feel like you’ve landed on a completely different planet.

Tonight, you’ll rest in the Hella region on the south coast of the country. In case of a late arrival, there’s also an option to spend the night by the sea near the airport.

D2:  Hiking the Golden Circle

The Golden Circle boasts some of Iceland’s most iconic attractions. Begin your day with a hike in the heart of Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its rift, marking the division between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. We’ll provide you with insider tips to make the most of this site while avoiding the crowds. Following this, marvel at the renowned Strokkur geyser, shooting towering plumes of water vapor into the sky, and witness the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, one of the country’s most breathtaking natural wonders.

After this remarkable day of exploration, return to your previous night’s accommodation for a restful overnight stay.

D3: Waterfalls and Enchanting Black Sand Beaches

In the afternoon, bid farewell to Mývatn and journey to the captivating Goðafoss Waterfall. From there, you’ll continue your exploration as you traverse the Eyjafjörður Fjord, ultimately reaching Akureyri and your splendid seaside accommodation.

Subject to availability, you’ll spend this night and the next two at the Helgafell center, thoughtfully managed by our agency. This arrangement allows for a more personalized and enriching experience, where you can meet fellow travelers and relish the opportunity to observe the midnight sun, the northern lights, as well as the diverse birdlife and playful whales. Many travelers opt to extend their stay here, making it their base for exploring the North in all its glory.

For those seeking tranquility, spending time at the Helgafell center provides a unique opportunity to savor the profound encounters that Iceland has to offer. You may also opt for a relaxing massage or a rejuvenating yoga class.

Be sure not to miss the striking Harpa cultural center, a true architectural marvel made of glass and steel, and the beautiful Hallgrímskirkja church, which graces the city’s skyline.

Reykjavik is a lively and bustling metropolis, teeming with small boutiques, trendy restaurants, and the comforts of civilization.

Alternatively, if you’re inclined to savor one more day of Iceland’s ever-changing natural beauty, consider a visit to the Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its active volcanoes. You might even have the opportunity to witness a live eruption!

Your night’s stay will be in the heart of the capital or near the seaside airport, depending on the timing of your flight the following day.

Good to know

  • Itinerary : on this self-drive tour we create a tailor-made itinerary following the length of your stay in Iceland and your personal interest according to our knowledge of the country as travel agency. A day by day itinerary will be given on a indicative basis and accommodations will be booked for you in advance. We provide you with all necessary maps and a trip information package with practical information that allows you to enjoy your vacation in the best possible way; tips on where to buy food, good restaurants, places to go – places to avoid, inescapable sites, our personal knowledge of Iceland and our experience as a local travel agent.
  • Domestic flight (if applicable): the flight between Reykjavik and Akureyri is carried out from Reykjavik domestic airport by the Icelandic company Air Iceland. For this flight you can embark at no extra charge with hand luggage of 6 kgs and hold luggage of 20 kgs.
  • Transport : For this self-drive we usually advice, outside the period from October to April, to rent a berline instead of a 4×4 only necessary on gravel roads for the highlands but not needed on paved road, except if you request something special.
  • Accommodation: We work as a priority with accommodation such as charming guesthouse or B&B, chosen for their comfort, hospitality and location, in relation with your itinerary. As the choice can be limited in some regions of the country, it is important to book your stay as soon as possible to benefit from the largest possible offer. In any case, we avoid standardized hotels. It is possible to choose other types of accommodation during your stay, 3/4 * hotel or camping. Contact us for any specific request.
  • Period to travel: we offer this itinerary all year round.
  • Important note, stay between mid-October and mid-April: If you decide to travel to Iceland at this period, in winter therefore, you may encounter difficult climatic conditions, with snow, icy roads (especially in the North and East of the country), and variable weather. Due to weather conditions you might not be able to access certain sites. In the worst case, you can get snow or sandstorms and temperatures sometimes well below 0 ° C. If you drive yourself in Iceland, this climate can affect your itinerary or driving. We will be there to help and advise you on your itinerary.
